Derek not...es? Or something.

At first, for the whole alpha fiasco I thought it was passed down through the mother's line too, through the females, like the Argent's line of power being (supposedly) through The Woman. (The men are soldiers, but the women are leaders blah blah pretty dilfs explain-y). But then I was like no that's dumb, and I'm going to have to go back and rewatch some eps and find out where/if Derek actually said "I wasn't supposed to be the alpha" or if that's all this dumbass (but wondrous) fandom shit I've melded together.
When that cunt Kate Argent launched that fire plan and burned the Hales to oblivion Laura, the older sibling, became the alpha. Not Uncle Peter who, yes was burned to fuck all, but he was still alive and healing! Now, Laura was not only older than Derek, but she was stronger. And definitely stronger than poor ol Uncle Peter AT THAT POINT AS FAR AS WE KNOW. So did THE POWAH only go to Laura because at that point she was the strongest between the three of them, or was it always going to go to her? In the furry hierarchy is it the wolf who kills the alpha becomes the alpha? Or could an alpha, when the time came, retire and relinquish this power to someone else without dying? Would it be through age? Or a Lion King affect where we have two siblings, one older one a bit younger. The older sibling is in line first naturally, so the power goes to them. But then they find a mate and have a child and the line continues from there, rubbing out the variable of the second sibling? The most able bodied beta gets the power upon the previous alphas demise, then. Derek didn't count, maybe he was a scrawny shit, plus he was a babbu, and Peter didn't count because he was half dead. But why was Derek never meant to be alpha? Even after the fire.
Killing the alpha to become the alpha makes sense, duh. Why did Derek seem to think random packs roamed their territory even after the hunters left, then? In order for this "random" alpha to go around fucking shit and taking names? He didn't know the extent one of his kind can come back from the brink, for starters. Plus who would suspect their comatose, as far as they know, family member? Is this because he was a youngun, a baby beta, on the cusp of his edjumacation when things went to shit and he and Laura ran? Even if they did stick around each other after Derek (presumably) turned 18, she must not have had time to teach him more than what he knows (like that wolfsbane bullet trick from season one) now. What, with starting over and scrambling to make ends meat. IF the age on that screencap of Derek's license is right and he's 24, that'd make him of age when the fire broke out. Or he could be 22, and the kiddies age back then when he got it on with that older hottie Kate.
Why didn't he do a little research inbetween, y'know, intimidating school boys and Not Dying, like a good boy?
